Frequently Asked Questions

Is it expensive to study and live in the US?

In addition to the tuition and miscellaneous fees that must be paid, the largest sources of living expenses for studying in the United States are housing, shopping, and catering. If the cost is sensitive, you must investigate the local average price level in advance to make a good plan for studying abroad.

Should I choose a school based on the major ranking or the comprehensive ranking?

Now there are various ranking lists, and the same school/major ranks very differently on different ranking lists. When choosing a school, the ranking can be used as one of the reference factors, but at the same time as reference, you must first understand the ranking. What is the ranking based on and is it a desired factor.

How many TOEFL and SAT scores do I need to get into a good school?

The definition of a good school varies according to the needs of each individual. At the same time, standardized test scores are not an absolute factor in school admissions. Paperwork, recommendation letters, extracurricular activities, etc. will all be important factors for school admissions consideration.

Does not participating in club activities affect the undergraduate application?

Although most high schools have associations and clubs, this does not mean that students must participate in clubs. Students can make good use of time to experience different things and find their interests in high school, as long as they can come up with coherent and meaningful stories of their high school life in their college application essays, such as internships, research projects, and community services, which our students will choose to participate in usually.

Is it difficult to apply for undergraduate scholarships?

There are two main types of American undergraduate scholarship applications: Merit-based and Need-Based. The former is the type of scholarship that most international students receive, and it is used by schools to encourage outstanding students to apply. The latter is also commonly known as bursary, which is generally provided to students from poor families who need financial assistance to go to school.

Do American universities have preparatory courses?

American universities do have preparatory courses, such as American University, Auburn University, Adelphi University. These are usually completed in the form of credit courses and English courses, without additional requirements, and you can directly enter the university after successfully completing the freshman year. Second study.

What qualities do American universities look for in students?

The admissions of American universities are different from that in China, and the qualities of students are not simply according to the test score. What American universities value are the performance and comprehensive quality of students throughout high school. High school academic performance, rank and standardized test (SAT/ACT) scores are several significant criteria. Personal award-winning experience is also very valued by many famous American schools. Also, personal essays in the application materials, including personal statement, teacher’s recommendation letter, TOEFL score, personal extracurricular activities, interests and specialities, and internship experience, are all key factors that determine whether an applicant can be admitted.

What majors can I choose to study in the United States?

American universities offer a wide range of majors. Most majors are under the three colleges:

  1. College of Arts and Sciences (including many basic subjects, such as mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, economics, and psychology.);
  2. College of Engineering (including all engineering majors, such as Electronic Engineering, Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering);
  3. Business School (including all business subjects, such as accounting, finance, marketing, and management). In addition, other popular majors include journalism, mass media, music, international politics, public affairs, education, art and design, urban planning, and agriculture.

Generally speaking, international students can choose their majors freely except for some majors like medicine, law, and architecture.

Which majors are easier to apply for and get a student visa?

For high school students applying for undergraduate programs in American universities, there is almost no difference between majors, except for some majors, such as medicine and law. These so-called “sensitive majors” do not affect high school students while applying for a VISA. So, there is plenty of freedom in choosing a major.

Can I study in the US without TOEFL scores?

Yes, you can. For example, the international-freshman-course programs are designed to help students without TOEFL scores, or students whose TOEFL scores do not meet the requirements of prestigious American schools, or those who have met the requirements of TOEFL scores but have low comprehensive abilities and have not been admitted to prestigious American schools.
