Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of students is suitable for undergraduate transfer?

  1. Chinese students in technical secondary school or junior college, and students studying in American community colleges, hope to obtain a bachelor’s degree in the United States through undergraduate transfer.

  2. Undergraduate students who experienced failures in the college entrance examination, and are not satisfied with their schools, hope to enter a better institution for further study through the US undergraduate transfer application.

  3. Undergraduate students are not ideal for the major they are currently studying. They hope to explore new academic fields through an undergraduate transfer in the United States and are eager to obtain inter-professional learning to improve their competitiveness.

When is the best time to transfer?

Sophomore is the best time to apply for a U.S. transfer. Some American universities require transfer students to complete more than one year, or 32 credits exempted from SAT requirements. Freshmen students can also apply for transfer since they have fewer credits earned. Some schools will require the submission of SAT scores and high school GPAs. It is more difficult for junior students to apply for transfer, and students can only transfer their credits earned in the first two years at most.

What is the difference between undergraduate transfer and applying as a freshman?

The definition for most transfer students in the United States is that they have completed 12 credits and above at the time of application. At this time, students are not allowed to apply as freshmen. There are more factors to consider for an undergraduate transfer than applying as a freshman. If a student applies as a freshman, the admissions officers usually pay more attention to the overall background of students during high school. But for undergraduate transfer students, their performance in undergraduate schools is more significant.

Can I change my major if I transfer to another university?

An undergraduate transfer is not just about changing to a new school, but also about major changing. And many students usually make final decisions on majors in junior year. For students who want to change majors, the most important thing is to know the prerequisite courses required to transfer to a specific major, so as not to fail to meet the corresponding requirements of the school.

What are the language test requirements for undergraduate transfers to American universities?

According to the data compiled by us in the U.S News Top 100 schools’ language requirements for transfer applications (including TOEFL and IELTS score requirements), a TOEFL score of 80 is the most basic requirement for application, and it is recommended to apply for a prestigious school with a score of 100 or more. Many schools also have additional individual requirements for TOEFL and IELTS individual scores of transfer applicants. Before applying, please check and confirm carefully. Some schools will also provide language courses if the language scores do not meet the basic requirements of the school.

When is the deadline to apply for undergraduate transfer?

The undergraduate transfer application is the same as applying as a freshman, which generally includes the spring and autumn semesters. The spring term starts in January each year, and the deadline for spring transfer is generally around October 15th to November 1st of the previous year. And the deadline for individual schools will be earlier in August or September. If you transfer in spring, you must pay attention to whether the major you are applying for has a spring transfer quota and whether it provides a spring semester.

Are there standardized test requirements for undergraduate transfers in the United States?

Most schools in U.S. News Top 30 require SAT or ACT scores for transfer applicants. Some schools can exempt applicants from SAT or ACT or can be exempted from college credits through the applicant’s school Standardized test requirements.

Before choosing a school and applying, please pay attention to credits transfer policy and other specific requirements.

Do I need a new visa after transferring to a new school in the United States?

If you studied in the United States and applied for an I-20 Transfer, your SEVIS Number will not change. In that case you don’t need to apply for a new visa.
